> _A privacy-first, open-source (frontend now, backend later) platform for knowledge sharing and management._ Limited #markdown (no headings), strange own #syntax with # at the beginning of each line (◦bullet point), representing indentation (example). Uses a database = changes in files are not automatically reflected in app, but backlinking is enabledĮvery bullet point can be referenced or embedded unfortunately not open sourceĪ privacy-first, open-source (frontend now, backend later) platform for knowledge sharing and management.Īlmost clone of roam research, #relational, #opensource, #graph-view #backlinks
judgement: looks very good, very functional. possible to use folders (which have no impact on internal links), support for nested tags (e.g. optional: zettelkasten-id, journaling, (/kuchengrab/md-publishing/wiki/Wiki-Links) etc. workspaces (notebooks), #tags, #graph-view, #backlinks, #proprietary. Obsidian is a powerful knowledge base that works on top of a local folder of plain text Markdown files.
(+) zettlr recognizes different kinds of tags, from YAML and hashtagsĪ second brain, for you, forever. Zettelkasten with ID-pattern ("raw" in text)
zettlr doesn't use a database, therefore backlinks would have to be created for each note individually = slow, resource hungry. (-) no backlinks, no graph view, no auto-suggest for existing notes cite directly in your markdown text by typing and it auto-suggests your sources from your CSL library (exported from reference manager Zotero) like this: p. (+) integration with pandoc & zotero (Better BibTeX references), auto-suggestion #markdown, #tags, #id #opensource, #zotero, #pandoc, ui #4/5 most advanced open source tool, but considerable lerning curve. nice publishing functionality → Web-Publishing. but seems really advanced, thought-through and cool! 🤓. for very advanced users/programmers (familiar with VScode). emphasises a good naming scheme for notes (continually adapt through "refactoring"), e.g. #opensource, #markdown, VScode, #zotero, #backlinks, #graph-view, #templates. The hierarchical note taking tool that grows as you do! Dendron is an open-source, local-first, markdown-based, note-taking tool built on top of VSCode. : Updated cell regarding display of Markdown vs.List of markdown-based apps for personal knowledge management (PKM), with wiki and/or journaling and todo functions. Zettlr allows adding color labels to tags (I personally wouldn't rely on this too much, as the color information is stored within Zettlr itself → Not portable) #foo_bar, Obsidian will only recognize #foo as a tag (might be a bug) Highlight position of search results in scrollbar When hovering over a link, a popup preview of the target file is shown Alignment of regular markdown text is as in plaintext file for theme "Bielefeld" (because it uses monospace font), while "Berlin" distorts alignment. ZETTLR GRAPH VIEW UPDATE
Update : This depends on the theme used in Zettlr. Obsidian seems to distort alignments (e.g., this table I did in Zettlr, but in Obsidian the alignment of the columns was broken does obviously not affect preview rendering of the table). Markdown content exactly as plaintext file Obsidian supports split views, i.e., having multiple files visible at the same time I.e., when file content is changed externally In Obisidan, the ID is only generated when creating the note, and is used as its filename In Zettlr, you can insert an ID at any point in the file. While typing the name of the target file, you can skip letters and the best matches are shown automaticallyĬreate new file when link target does not exist The ID doesn't have to be in the file name, it can also be inside the file itself (useful for Zettelkasten, see below)įuzzy search complete when creating links Zettlr kind of supports this by showing linking files in the search results

As both tools have many things in common, I decided to list in the table below features/aspects that are currently exclusive to one or the other.įeel free to give me your feedback, and add your findings in the comments as well! Feature Since with Obsidian a new competitor entered the "battlefield" of Writing/Notetaking/Zettelkasten software, I felt like comparing Obsidian with Zettlr.
